White Water Rafting in Alberta Some half-billion years ago, a large, shallow sea deposited layer upon layer of sediments and fossils on what is now the Canadian Rockies. The water receded 90 million years ago as the Rockies formed, with massive forces thrusting and folding the carbonate sediment skyward. Repeated cycles of glaciation began an ongoing process of sculpting the mountains to their present shape. The result is quite a sight, a seemingly endless assemblage of jagged peaks, glacier valleys and exceptional rivers with plenty of white water rafting.
